Fall-in-Age Consortium
Innovative Training for Technology-based Frailty and Falls Management
The consortium of this project is composed of four partners with interdisciplinary skills to successfully guarantee the achievement of the project objectives:
Universidade de Lisboa (UL);
Instituto Superior Técnico (IST)
Faculdade de Motricidade Humana (FMH)
Instituto de Biomecanica de Valencia (IBV);
Istituto Nazionale di Riposo e Cura per Anziani (INRCA);
European General Practice Research Network (EGPRN);
UL, IBV and INRCA will be responsible for the development and implementation of the course contents. UL is a recognized university with extensive experience in pedagogic elaboration and adaptation of formative contents for the development of online training courses using open source platforms. IBV is a European leading research center focused on biomechanics and its application in medicine. INRCA is a research institution, whose mission is the implementation of translation research in geriatric and ageing topics into clinical settings. The update of the training contents to the project key stakeholders requirements is assured with the participation and supervision of the European General Practice Research Network (EGPRN). EGPRN is an international reference institution, which represents the Primary Care and Famility Medicine in Europe. Therefore, EGPRN will play a key role in the uniformization of contents, scopes and applicability of project results. UL will also coordinate the project, assuring an adequate development of project activities with the purpose to guarantee the optimal consecution of project objectives and intellectual outcomes. The consortium was chosen taking into account the experience that all partners have in disseminating project activities at national and international level.
Universidade de Lisboa (UL)
Following an outstanding scientific and cultural tradition inherited from its prior institutions, Universidade de Lisboa was created in July 2013, as a result of the merge of Universidade Técnica de Lisboa and Universidade de Lisboa (tracing its origins to the establishment of the Portuguese University in 1290). Universidade de Lisboa has 18 schools and over 100 research units, around 50,000 students, 4.000 lecturers, 2.500 non-academic staff and 400 degree courses. Teaching, research, science, technology and innovation are the core business of Universidade de Lisboa. UL aims to enhance its position as a “reference university”, not only on a nation-wide level, but also across Europe.
Universidade de Lisboa awards 1st cycle and 2nd cycle degrees, as well as 3rd cycle Degrees (Doctor) and the title of “Agregado”. It also has alternative offerings, such as programmes for continuing education, postgraduate studies and specialization courses aimed at meeting the training demands of emerging labour markets, at boosting economic competitiveness and promoting innovation. IST Mission is to create and disseminate knowledge and to give students the education and the knowledge tools to improve, to change and to shape society through science, technology and entrepreneurship. IST hosts about 8500 undergraduate (BSc and MSc), 1500 postgraduate students (of which 700 PhD students) and has been leading multiple professional training initiatives, having a faculty of nearly 800 professors. Students can choose from a wide variety of MSc and PhD programs offered at IST, covering classical engineering and basic science fields as well as a number of the emerging scientific areas. A significant number of international students participate in IST’s Master and Doctoral programs. IST, through its teaching and research staff is involved in some of the most prestigious RD&I and technology transfer projects in Portugal and Europe. Faculdade de Motricidade Humana (FMH)
The Faculty of Human Kinetics (FMH) is a school of the University of Lisbon. FMH covers a wide range of study areas of interest to various sectors of society, with 5 Undergraduate Courses, 15 Master’s Courses and 2 Doctoral degrees (Human Movement and Education). FMH has several partnerships with universities, public and private entities, developing relationships in the scientific and pedagogical fields. Its courses and graduate programs cover the areas of human development, motor behaviour, self-regulatory processes, and aging mechanisms. These topics are studied in order to promote health and well-being, as well as performance improvement within family, community, education, health, employment, and sports. Instituto de Biomecanica de Valencia (IBV)
The Instituto de Biomecánica (IBV) is a technological centre that studies the behavior of the human body and its interaction with products, environments and services. Founded in 1976, the Institute is currently coordinated under the agreement of the Valencian Institute of Business Competitiveness (IVACE) and the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV). With the aim to improve competitiveness among the business sector, the IBV promotes people’s well-being through the combination of knowledge in areas such as biomechanics, ergonomics and emotional engineering, and its application to diverse sectors.
IBV is composed out of a multidisciplinary team formed by around 150 persons including mechanical and product engineers, biomechanical and movement science engineers, medical doctors, physical therapists, podiatrists and physics among others. The aim of IBV is to improve quality of life, as well as competitiveness of companies and self-employed people. The IBV works in the following areas of expertise, providing high-value services and products: automotive and mass transport, sports, habitat, clothing and footwear, elderly people, rehabilitation and personal autonomy, occupational health and safety, healthcare technology, tourism and person-oriented-design. Istituto Nazionaledi Riposo e Cura per Anziani (INRCA)
The Italian National Centre on Health and Science on Aging (INRCA) is an Italian public health organization with about 1,100 employees. Its headquarter is based in Ancona, with branches operating in three Italian Regions (Marche, Lombardia, Calabria), through four geriatric hospitals, an Alzheimer day care centre, a nursing home and a multidisciplinary Scientific and Technology Research Facility. Amongst a network of 45 centres funded by the Italian Ministry of Health to carry out research beyond their traditional care tasks, INRCA is the only institute specifically focused on geriatric and gerontological topics in Italy. This peculiar position allows INRCA to carry out high-quality clinical and translational research in biomedical and health care services areas, as well as to provide evidence and recommendations to private and public institutions concerning the socio-economic impact of ageing. European General Practice Research Network (EGPRN)
EGPRN is the Network organization of general practitioners/family doctors and other health professionals involved in research in primary care and family medicine in Europe. EGPRN offers members the opportunity to meet researcher colleagues by organizing meetings twice annually, prompting local and international research collaboration amongst researchers in family medicine. At such meetings research papers are presented and discussed at length, in order to allow participants showcase and improve their research projects.
Key EGPRN activities include: conferences twice annually, research courses, public website database of past abstracts, the European research agenda reference document, regular reports from national representatives, position papers on the theme of the conferences published in European journals to summarise each conference’s proceedings. Services to members: mentoring of researchers, networking of like-minded researchers, forum for research discussion, methodology workshops, publication of selected research abstracts in European Journal of General Practice, EJGP articles on-line access, among others. The Department of Family Medicine of the University of Maastricht offers support as the central administrative office for the activities of EGPRN, through the EGPRN Co-ordination Centre which is located in that department.
